The Dual God

The Savosi, Brairi and many surrounding nations predominantly worship Un, the dual-aspect god of Life and Death. Un’s domain is considered to be all living creatures, and aurum, the substance of magic, is derived from Their blood. Although understood by worshippers to be a single entity in philosophical terms, in practice most people worship one of the Aspects.

Amn: Birth and Creation

Amn is the life-giving aspect of Un. In mythology She appears occasionally in human form, as a healthy young woman. More often, though, She wears the guise of a sow or a bee, offering food and honey respectively. Although Amn is generally considered to be friendly to humans, She is something of a trickster. Under Her influence an old woman might suddenly fall pregnant, or apricots might hatch into thousands of baby spiders. She also turns this trickery on Nire, sometimes earning extra years of life for her favourite humans.

Amn is by far the preferred aspect of Un, She is worshipped by almost everyone, but especially by farmers and liveworkers – those who operate biological machines.

Nire: Time, Cold and Death

Nire is the aspect of Un which takes life. Few are devoted Nire worshippers, but those who are typically have dangerous jobs and wish to stave off fate. Nire is also a god favoured by ‘philosophers’ in the mage classes, who treat the worship as an intellectual exercise more than an interaction with a higher being. The Nirite school of magic focuses on moving energy rather than generating new life.

Although Nire represents death, He is not usually thought of as being evil, merely cold and unfeeling. His work reflects the natural order of the world, where nothing can last forever.

Insofar as thralls worship, they might beg Nire for mercy.
