Thrall Names

Background

Although thralls are slaves, they retain a legal right to name their own children. In the main story setting thralls can be loosely divided into two groups:

  1. The city-dwelling thralls living in corporate housing, who are in close contact with humans on a daily basis
  2. Thralls at or near the Fronts, who see humans less frequently and are culturally much more independant.

So, a thralls name will often reflect where they were born.

General Names

Thralls often use traditional names from their own human ancestry. Since thralls were created in several separate nations almost simultaneously, and were then swapped between them, there are almost a dozen possible ethnic origins for thrall names.
In practical terms, this means if you’re naming a character you can invent something that sounds nice and it’ll work fine with the lore. However for obvious reasons, thralls living in Savic cities might be hesitant to use names that come from enemy nations.

If you’re looking for names, Orion England and Pengo Wray have kindly created a name generator that produces lore-appropriate thrall names. You can try it out here:

Names from the Front

Many thralls on the Fronts have started naming their children using Corps-Savic words, or creating new Corps-sounding variants of traditional names. Names in Corps-Savic often sound Brairi, and can be very hard to live with in Savos. The name generator can produce several names like this.

City Names

Out of necessity, thrall mothers in cities often give their children names that make them sound harmless and friendly to humans. Traditional Savic names are fairly common, as well as newly-coined names that sound sweet or innocent. Flower names are probably the most common for females, eg.: Clover, Rose, Anise, Lily. Males are often given the childish nickname version of traditional names, for example Urald becomes Uri.

Intersex thralls are often given highly masculine or feminine names; the mother’s attempt to compensate for what is likely to be a more difficult life.

Corps-Savic names have also filtered back from the Fronts towards the cities. However, thralls in cities are well aware that humans don’t like Corps, and don’t like these names. One common tactic is to take a Corps name and create a Savic-ised nickname version, which tends to sound more cutesy and harmless to Savic ears.
